MUSCAT — Oman’s network of internationally recognised healthy cities has grown to eight after Barka and Yanqul received recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) under its Healthy Cities Programme.

The recognition marks another step in Oman’s efforts to build healthier and more sustainable communities by integrating public health considerations into local development and improving the environments in which people live and work.

Barka and Yanqul join six other Omani cities previously recognised under the programme, bringing the nationwide total to eight.

The Healthy Cities Programme promotes a community-based approach to health and wellbeing, encouraging cooperation across government institutions, local communities and other stakeholders to create environments that support healthier lifestyles.

The latest recognition further strengthens Oman’s participation in the international Healthy Cities network and reflects ongoing efforts to advance public health, quality of life and sustainable community development in line with WHO standards.
