Muscat: The Ministry, responding to discussions surrounding a proposal to fill abandoned pits and wells that pose safety risks, said the Directorate General of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate had previously studied the issue and submitted a number of recommendations to the Al Dhahirah Municipal Council.

The Directorate said additional proposals had also been referred to specialists at the Ministry to establish clearer regulations for dealing with abandoned and uncovered wells.

Work is currently underway to incorporate these proposals into the regulations governing water licences, the statement said.

Authorities have also previously contacted governors to encourage owners of wells located on private properties to cover them and install protective fencing to prevent people and animals from falling into them.

The Ministry said awareness material on the dangers posed by exposed wells had also been prepared and circulated through social media platforms.

The Directorate General of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate has called on citizens to report any exposed or abandoned wells that may pose a danger by contacting the Directorate or its departments across the governorate.

It also urged owners of private wells to cooperate with authorities and take immediate steps to properly cover and secure their wells in order to protect members of the community.

The Directorate added that it welcomes suggestions and proposals aimed at improving public safety and reducing risks associated with abandoned wells.
