FUKUOKA : The decisive Pool A clash represents Oman’s final opportunity to secure a place among the tournament’s eight quarter-finalists after defeats to hosts Japan and Australia in their opening two matches.

Oman began their campaign with a 3-1 defeat against Japan, but produced an encouraging performance by taking the third set 25-20 from the hosts. Japan eventually won the match 25-18, 25-13, 20-25, 25-9.

The national team then suffered a straight-sets defeat against Australia on Monday, going down 25-18, 25-14 and 25-22. The result ensured Australia’s progression to the knockout stage and also confirmed Japan among the quarter-finalists from Pool A.

Oman will now have to deliver their strongest performance of the tournament against Bahrain, with a 3-0 victory giving them the best possible chance of advancing as one of the two best third-placed teams across the three groups.

The Red Warriors hold a potentially important advantage over Bahrain after winning a set against Japan. Bahrain, meanwhile, lost 3-0 to Australia in their opening match, with the Australians winning 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21.

Wednesday’s contest is therefore expected to be a high-pressure encounter, with both Gulf sides fighting to extend their campaigns in Japan.

The 2026 continental championship features 12 of Asia’s leading national teams, divided into three groups. Pool A comprises Japan, Australia, Oman and Bahrain, while Pool B features Iran, China, India and New Zealand. Pool C includes Qatar, South Korea, Thailand and Chinese Taipei.

Following the preliminary stage, the top eight teams progress to the quarter-finals, which will be played in a knockout format before the semi-finals and final.

The championship, being held in Fukuoka Prefecture from September 4 to 13, carries major international significance, serving as a qualifying event for both the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup.
