MUSCAT : The sewage network project in the Wilayat of Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate has reached 68 percent completion, with the RO 2 million development expected to be completed in the final quarter of this year.
Implemented by Nama Water Services, the project is designed to create an integrated system for collecting and treating wastewater while expanding the use of recycled water.
The mountainous terrain of Al Jabal Al Akhdar has presented significant engineering challenges, requiring the project team to adapt construction methods and technical solutions to steep slopes, varying elevations and the geographical characteristics of the area.

Engineer Ahmed Al Houti, Director of the Al Jabal Al Akhdar Project at Nama Water Services, said the mountainous environment requires a high degree of precision in planning and implementing sewage and recycled water routes.
He told the Oman News Agency that the project goes beyond building a conventional sewage network, creating an interconnected system covering wastewater transportation, treatment and the reuse of treated water.
“The nature of the mountain and its elevations makes adapting engineering solutions to the terrain a key element throughout the implementation stages,” he said.
The project includes a 4.2-kilometre main sewage line, with pipe diameters ranging between 500mm and 700mm, as well as around 46 sewage chambers.
It also includes a tertiary treated water network extending for approximately 9 kilometres, allowing treated wastewater to be returned to productive use.
As part of the project, the recycled water network will be linked to a new tertiary treated water pumping station.
A 6,620-metre pipeline will transport treated water from the treatment plant to Al Yamani Park, with internal diameters ranging from 100mm to 250mm.
Two additional pipelines extending for around 1,250 metres will also be connected to pressure-reducing valve chambers to supply recycled water to beneficiaries.
Al Houti said the project would help protect soil and groundwater resources from pollution by directing wastewater towards an integrated treatment system.
It is also expected to reduce reliance on sewage tanker transportation and conventional wastewater disposal methods, improving both environmental and public health efficiency.
The reuse of treated wastewater for the irrigation of parks and green spaces will also reduce pressure on freshwater resources.
According to Nama Water Services, the approach supports the concept of a circular water economy, where wastewater is treated and returned to the water cycle rather than being viewed simply as a byproduct requiring disposal.
Al Houti said the project is closely aligned with Oman Vision 2040, particularly its objectives related to environmental protection, water security, sustainable resource use, advanced wastewater treatment and the development of a green and circular economy.
The Oman Vision 2040 framework targets the reuse of more than 50 percent of treated water across the agricultural, industrial and service sectors.
