MUSCAT : More than 332,000 livestock have been vaccinated across South Al Batinah Governorate under the national livestock vaccination campaign for the 2025-2026 season, as authorities step up efforts to protect herds from infectious diseases and strengthen animal health.

The Directorate General of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in South Al Batinah said the campaign covered 332,674 animals and benefited 3,752 livestock breeders, achieving a completion rate of 167 percent of the original target.

The number of animals vaccinated also increased by 5.3 percent, highlighting the expansion of preventive veterinary services across the governorate.

Of the total, Barka recorded the highest number of vaccinations with 105,129 animals, followed by Rustaq with 97,874, Al Musannah with 76,160, Nakhl with 28,086, Al Awabi with 14,265 and Wadi Al Maawil with 11,160.

The vaccinated livestock comprised 228,992 goats, 89,137 sheep, 14,450 cattle and 95 camels.

The vaccination programme targeted several major animal diseases, including peste des petits ruminants, pox, foot-and-mouth disease, enterotoxemia, lumpy skin disease and rabies.

Preventive veterinary services were also provided to livestock breeders across the various wilayats of South Al Batinah.

Campaign indicators showed a decline in the number of animals requiring treatment over recent years. The number fell by 22 percent in 2023, 30 percent in 2024 and 27 percent in 2025, reflecting the impact of expanding vaccination, prevention and herd-immunisation programmes.

A total of 7,298 vaccine packages were used during the season, demonstrating the scale of veterinary operations carried out under the programme.
