MUSCAT : The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology inaugurated the Harweeb-Meten road in the Wilayat of Al Mazunah and a new asphalt road network in the Wilayat of Muqshin, as part of wider efforts to upgrade transport infrastructure across the governorate.

The opening was held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar, who said the projects form part of the growing momentum to develop infrastructure in the governorate.

He said road development remains one of the main pillars of comprehensive development and stressed that work will continue to strengthen and expand the road network across Dhofar.

According to His Highness, the two projects represent a significant addition to Dhofar’s transport network and support the governorate’s wider strategy to accelerate development by improving infrastructure, transport efficiency and the foundations for sustainable growth.

His Excellency Eng. Saeed bin Hamoud Al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said the ministry continues to develop Oman’s road infrastructure in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.

He said the development of a modern road network based on high standards would improve connectivity between wilayats and governorates, increase traffic efficiency and support economic, social and tourism development.

The Harweeb-Meten road project stretches for 210 kilometres and is expected to play an important role in strengthening Al Mazunah’s links with surrounding areas, the land port and the Al Mazunah Free Zone, as well as the land crossing with neighbouring Yemen.

The project is also expected to support the movement of goods and strengthen Al Mazunah’s position as a commercial and logistics hub, while encouraging investment, tourism and related services.

The 210km project includes the 45km Harweeb-Andat road, the 26km Andat-Tousnat road, the 39km Tousnat-Al Mazunah road, the 90km Al Mazunah-Meten road and the 10km Andat-Habrout road.

Officials said the new route would also support urban expansion, improve access to services and economic centres and enhance road safety across the wilayat.

Meanwhile, the Muqshin asphalt road network covers around 170 kilometres, connecting the wilayat centre with several districts and communities.

The network runs from Muqshin centre through areas including Mandar Al-Dhibyan, Al-Mashash, Marsudd, Al-Manader and Shajaj, improving links between residential areas, service centres and production zones.

The ministry said the project would make the movement of people and goods easier, improve access to public services and facilities and support stronger administrative and developmental integration across the wilayat.

It is also expected to help unlock Muqshin’s tourism and economic potential by strengthening transport links between population centres and productive areas.
