Mexico: The 23-year-old Frenchwoman secured the breakthrough title at the WTA 500 hard-court tournament in her final preparation ahead of the US Open, overcoming a difficult second set to prevail in two hours and 30 minutes.
Parry made a strong start to the final, racing into a 4-1 lead in the opening set. Mertens, 30, responded by drawing level, but the Frenchwoman regained control and broke the Belgian’s serve to take the set 6-4.
Mertens completely turned the momentum in the second set, winning six consecutive games and breaking Parry’s serve three times to take it 6-0. Parry required a medical timeout while trailing 5-0 but was able to continue.
