ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was transferred back to Adiala Jail early Friday after undergoing court-ordered medical examinations at a private hospital in Islamabad, the government said.

Khan, 73, was taken to Shifa International Hospital late Thursday following a Supreme Court directive requiring authorities to arrange a medical examination and treatment within 48 hours after his lawyers raised concerns over his health.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said a team of doctors, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician, carried out a detailed examination of the jailed former premier.

“A team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist and a physician, conducted a detailed examination of him and declared him medically fit,” Tarar said in a post on X.

He said Khan was returned to Adiala Jail after the medical process was completed. Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, was present during the examination, according to the minister.

Security was tightened around the hospital ahead of Khan’s arrival, with hundreds of police personnel deployed in the area and roads leading to the facility cordoned off.

Dozens of supporters of Khan gathered outside the hospital as news of his transfer spread.

Concerns over Khan’s health have intensified in recent months, particularly over his eyesight. He underwent eye treatment at a hospital earlier this year, with his family and lawyer saying at the time that he had lost most of the vision in his right eye.
