SINGAPORE: The dollar index, which tracks the US currency against six major currencies, stood at 98.938, close to its lowest level since mid-May. The euro was at $1.1676, its highest level since late May.
The US Treasury Department announced plans to double its liquidity-supporting repurchase operations for long-term bonds following a sharp sell-off that pushed the yield on 30-year Treasury notes to a 19-year high of 5.337 percent.
The 30-year yield later settled at 5.184 percent, down nine basis points following Wednesday’s decision.
The yen was last trading at 158.32 against the dollar, moving away from the closely watched 160 level after much of the gains recorded following joint intervention at the end of July were erased.
Sterling settled at $1.3603, while the Swiss franc stood at 0.7981 against the dollar, near its highest level in two months.
