WASHINGTON – In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said imported generic medicines would remain exempt from tariffs until August 2028. After that, they would face a 100 percent tariff for one year, before the rate increases to 200 percent.
Trump said the two-year grace period would give pharmaceutical companies sufficient time to relocate production of generic drugs to the United States.
He also warned that companies choosing not to establish manufacturing facilities in the US would face penalties, although he did not specify what those penalties would be or outline the legal basis for imposing the proposed tariffs.
The announcement is expected to increase pressure on pharmaceutical manufacturers that currently produce generic medicines outside the United States.
