MUSCAT – Morocco, Spain and Portugal will serve as the main hosts, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will stage special centenary matches.
The expanded hosting model has been designed to mark the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup, which was held in Uruguay in 1930. As part of the celebrations, the tournament will begin in South America before shifting to Europe and Africa for the remainder of the competition.
According to FIFA’s proposed schedule, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay are expected to host one opening-round match each on June 8 and 9, 2030. The main phase of the tournament is then set to begin in Morocco, Portugal and Spain on June 13 and 14, with the final currently expected to be played on July 21, subject to confirmation when FIFA releases the official match calendar.
Uruguay’s role reflects its place in football history as the host and winner of the inaugural World Cup a century earlier. Argentina, which finished runners-up in the 1930 final, will also stage a commemorative match, while Paraguay was selected in recognition of being home to CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body.
The unprecedented arrangement means the World Cup will be played across Africa, Europe and South America, making it the most geographically diverse edition of the men’s tournament.
All six host nations – Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay – have automatically qualified for the finals. The remaining 42 places will be decided through FIFA’s continental qualification process over the coming years.
