MUSCAT – The Olio brand secured gold awards at the Abu Dhabi International Olive Oil Competition, the European International Olive Oil Competition in Geneva and the Scandinavian International Olive Oil Competition (SIOOC), where extra virgin olive oils are evaluated based on strict chemical and sensory quality standards by specialised international judging panels.
Ghanem bin Salem Al Thani, CEO of Al Fawah Perfumery, said the achievements reflect the quality of Al Jabal Al Akhdar olive oil, which benefits from the region’s unique mountainous environment and climatic conditions.
He explained that the high altitude, moderate temperatures and differences between day and night temperatures contribute to slower fruit growth, helping concentrate flavours and increase natural phenolic compounds in the oil.
Al Thani said Olio extra virgin olive oil has a low acidity level ranging between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent, reflecting careful production processes and high quality standards.
He added that maintaining quality begins during harvesting, with olives collected at the optimal ripeness stage and transferred for pressing within 24 hours. The oil is produced through cold pressing at temperatures not exceeding 27 degrees Celsius to preserve its natural characteristics and nutritional value.

After pressing, the oil is stored in food-grade stainless steel tanks away from light, heat and oxygen. Nitrogen is used to reduce oxidation before filling, while opaque packaging helps preserve quality until the product reaches consumers.
Al Thani said the Olio brand was established to present Al Jabal Al Akhdar olive oil under a trusted Omani identity and strengthen its presence in local and international markets.
He said the project initially faced challenges in building consumer confidence and introducing a new Omani product, but adherence to quality standards throughout production helped enhance the brand’s reputation.
The product is currently marketed in local markets and has attracted interest from visitors to Jabal Al Akhdar, with plans to expand into international markets.
Al Thani said the international awards have strengthened confidence in Omani products and demonstrated the ability of local agricultural and food industries to compete globally.
He encouraged Omani youth to explore opportunities in agriculture and food manufacturing by focusing on innovation, brand development and commitment to international quality standards.
