MYSURU : Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, whose voice defined generations of Indian film music, passed away in Mysuru at the age of 88.

Fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” Janaki enjoyed an illustrious career spanning nearly six decades and emerged as one of the most influential voices in Indian cinema. With an extraordinary repertoire of around 48,000 songs recorded in multiple Indian and foreign languages, she earned widespread admiration for her versatility, emotional depth and ability to effortlessly adapt to different musical styles.

Her timeless songs resonated with audiences across linguistic and cultural boundaries, making her a beloved figure in households across India and beyond. From soulful melodies to powerful classical renditions and lively film tracks, Janaki’s voice became synonymous with some of the most memorable moments in Indian cinema.
