HANOI : A tourist speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members overturned about 400 metres from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, near Vietnam’s southern island of Phu Quoc, state media reported.

Authorities said 21 people were rescued, while all 15 bodies were recovered following a difficult rescue operation. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Eyewitnesses told VN Express that nearby boats were the first to rush to the scene, pulling survivors from the water before border guards, the navy, coast guard and other rescue agencies arrived. Rescue efforts were challenging as several passengers were reportedly trapped inside the overturned vessel.

The boat was returning from an island trip when it capsized. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. AP reported that the incident involved heavy waves, which complicated rescue operations.

Phu Quoc, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is Vietnam’s largest island and a major tourist destination known for its white-sand beaches and clear waters. Hon May Rut Island, about 10 kilometres south of Phu Quoc, is a popular stop for domestic and international visitors.
