Ottawa: The match ended goalless after regular time and extra time, with both sides creating chances but failing to find the decisive breakthrough. A combination of missed opportunities and disciplined defensive performances from both teams kept the score locked at 0-0 for 120 minutes, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.

Switzerland held their nerve from the spot, converting four penalties, while Colombia managed three, allowing the Swiss side to seal a dramatic victory and book their place in the last eight.

With the result, Switzerland will now face Argentina in the quarter-finals, setting up a high-profile clash against the defending champions.

Switzerland’s qualification also completes the list of teams through to the quarter-finals of the current World Cup edition. The Swiss join France, Belgium, Argentina, Morocco, England, Norway and Spain in the final eight.

According to FIFA statistics, the goalless draw also meant that Enzo Fernández’s goal for Argentina against Egypt remained the 3,000th goal in men’s FIFA World Cup history. Neither Switzerland nor Colombia managed to score the first goal after that landmark, as the Vancouver clash ended without a goal from open play.
