ATLANTA: A mesmerizing Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to one of the greatest comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026, as the defending champions rallied from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure a place in the quarterfinals.
For much of the match, Argentina appeared destined for a shock exit. Egypt stunned the world champions when Yasser Ibrahim headed home in the 15th minute before Mostafa Zico doubled the Pharaohs’ advantage in the 67th minute, leaving Lionel Scaloni’s side staring at elimination.

But Argentina found another gear in the closing stages. Cristian Romero sparked the comeback with a goal in the 79th minute before Messi, carrying the hopes of a nation, levelled the scores just four minutes later with a trademark finish that ignited celebrations among Argentine supporters.
With extra time looming, Argentina delivered the decisive blow in stoppage time. Enzo Fernández struck in the 90+3rd minute to complete a remarkable turnaround and send the reigning world champions into the last eight.
The victory keeps Argentina’s title defence alive and preserves Messi’s dream of ending what could be his final World Cup campaign with another shot at football’s biggest prize. For Egypt, the defeat was heartbreaking after producing a performance that came within minutes of becoming one of the tournament’s most famous victories.
