PARIS – Hundreds of firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze in the provinces of Herault and Aude, which was exacerbated by drought and strong winds.
Officials reported that approximately 200 people were evacuated or ordered to remain in their homes in Pouzols-Minervois and Mailhac.
Local fire crews reported two other smaller fires in Rognac and Lançon-Provence near Marseille.
This fire comes one year after major fires in the Corbières region and just days after a severe heat wave swept across large parts of Europe.
France’s health agency reported last Sunday that it had recorded 1,000 deaths above the normal rate during the severe heat wave sweeping across Europe, warning that the actual number could be even higher.
