DOHA : Sources said the discussions are being conducted indirectly through Qatari mediators, with no face-to-face meeting planned between senior US and Iranian officials. The negotiations are expected to focus on three key tracks: Iran’s nuclear programme, diplomatic arrangements and the release of frozen Iranian funds.

A major priority is the revival of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. While traffic has begun to recover following the interim deal, vessel movement remains well below normal levels amid continued security concerns, recent attacks on ships and uncertainty over maritime arrangements in the waterway.

Maritime intelligence firm Windward reported that 42 vessels transited the strait on June 29, including 23 inbound and 19 outbound ships, highlighting a gradual but uneven return of commercial activity.

Security analyst Wolfgang Pusztai told Al Jazeera that restoring commercial shipping was likely to be the most important outcome of any US-Iran understanding, given the significance of the route for Gulf economies and global trade.

The negotiations also come as Iran seeks access to billions of dollars in frozen funds held in Qatar. Reports indicate that any release of funds is expected to be tied to agreed conditions and implemented in stages rather than through a one-time transfer.

Meanwhile, Oman has reiterated its opposition to transit fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while leaving room for discussions on voluntary charges linked to maritime safety, navigation and environmental services. Muscat has stressed the importance of free navigation and safe passage through the strategic waterway.
