Los Angeles: Canada kept its FIFA World Cup dream alive after edging South Africa 1-0 in a tense knockout-stage opener, with Steven Eustáquio scoring the decisive goal in the 92nd minute.

The dramatic victory marks a historic milestone for Canada, which is competing in the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time and has now advanced to the Round of 16.

The defeat brought an end to South Africa’s hopes of reaching the last 16 for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history despite an impressive campaign.

Canada will now face the winner of the clash between the Netherlands and Morocco for a place in the quarter-finals.

Canada reached the knockout rounds after finishing second in Group B with four points, following a draw against Bosnia, a victory over Qatar and a defeat to Switzerland.

South Africa also progressed as runners-up in Group A with four points, having lost to Mexico in their opening match before drawing with the Czech Republic and defeating South Korea.
