Rome: Marrit Steenbergen delivered a historic performance at the City Colle International Championships in Rome, breaking the women’s 100m freestyle world record with a stunning time of 51.68 seconds.
The Dutch star shaved 0.03 seconds off the previous world record of 51.71 seconds, which had been set by Olympic champion Sarah Sjöström at the 2017 World Championships.
The achievement marks another major milestone in women’s swimming and adds to a remarkable month of record-breaking performances.

Steenbergen’s feat also means Sjöström has now lost two of her world records this month. Earlier, American swimmer Kate Douglas rewrote the record books in the women’s 50m freestyle during the American Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis.
Douglas, 24, touched the wall in 23.59 seconds, surpassing Sjöström’s previous world record of 23.61 seconds, which the Swedish great had set at the 2023 World Championships in Japan.
