MUSCAT – This year’s observance is being held under the theme ‘The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses’, highlighting the evolving nature of drug trafficking and abuse and the need for enhanced international cooperation and prevention strategies.
Colonel Said bin Salim al Maawali, Assistant Director-General of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control at the Royal Oman Police, said authorities have identified new smuggling and consumption methods, including the use of paper infused with narcotic liquids, warning that such substances can cause rapid addiction and significantly affect mental and cognitive abilities.
He noted that recent seizures indicate an increase in synthetic drugs, while stressing that all narcotic and psychotropic substances pose serious health, social, economic and security risks.
He called for stronger family supervision and community awareness, particularly during the summer holiday period, urging parents to engage with young people, encourage positive activities and monitor behavioural changes that may indicate drug use.
According to Al Maawali, warning signs can include red eyes, dilated pupils, insomnia, weight fluctuations, isolation, poor concentration, mood swings and other physical and behavioural changes.
The ROP said it continues to work with national institutions and international partners to combat drug trafficking through enforcement operations, awareness programmes, exhibitions and educational campaigns targeting different segments of society.
As part of the observance, the ROP will organise a ‘Sports Evening’ event at Al Mouj Walk in Seeb on June 27 from 5pm to 9pm, followed by a public awareness exhibition at Muscat Mall on June 28 to highlight anti-drug efforts and promote community awareness.
