MUSCAT – The Sultanate of Oman is advancing efforts to adopt advanced air mobility technologies as part of its vision to develop a future-ready aviation sector aligned with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and the National Aviation Strategy 2040.

Advanced air mobility is an emerging field in aviation that uses next-generation aircraft, including electric and unmanned aerial vehicles, to provide flexible transport solutions. The technology is expected to support logistics, healthcare and humanitarian services, while contributing to lower emissions and more efficient use of airspace.

As part of these efforts, Oman recently conducted an applied trial for air cargo transportation using a drone, during which a 100-kilogramme shipment of medicines and medical supplies was transported from the Military Technical College in Muscat to Al Jabal Al Akhdar, covering a distance of nearly 100 kilometres.

The trial represents a practical example of how advanced air mobility can support supply chains, particularly in areas with challenging geographical conditions, within a regulated operational environment and established safety frameworks.

Rawya bint Nasser Al Adawi, Director General of Civil Aviation Regulation, said the CAA continues to carry out its regulatory and supervisory responsibilities by issuing required licences, monitoring operations, developing regulatory frameworks and ensuring compliance with approved safety and security standards.

She explained that operational, technical and implementation aspects related to advanced air mobility projects and trials are managed by the relevant authorities within their respective areas of responsibility.

Al Adawi said the Advanced Air Mobility Programme is a priority initiative under Oman Vision 2040 and the National Aviation Strategy 2040, supporting the development of an innovation-driven economy based on technology and sustainability.

She noted that the programme focuses on three key areas: developing the regulatory and legislative framework for advanced air mobility in Oman, establishing and activating a drone traffic management platform, and enabling the gradual implementation of advanced air mobility through safe and controlled testing environments.

The programme aims to create an integrated ecosystem for drones and related technologies, enhance the readiness of the aviation sector to keep pace with global developments, and provide an environment that encourages investment and innovation, strengthening Oman’s regional competitiveness.

Al Adawi added that Oman’s adoption of advanced air mobility aligns with international aviation trends led by the International Civil Aviation Organization to promote safe, innovative and sustainable air transport systems.

Advanced air mobility is expected to create new opportunities for smart transportation solutions across healthcare, logistics and service sectors, supporting more effective use of airspace.
