MUSCAT – The ministry, represented by the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology, has called on manufacturers and importers of lubricating oils to comply with the updated Gulf Technical Regulation aimed at enhancing product safety, quality standards, and environmental protection.
The ministry said all concerned economic operators must implement Gulf Technical Regulation No. GSO 1785-1:2024, titled “Lubricating Oils for Internal Combustion Engines – Part 1: API Classifications of Lubricating Oils for Gasoline and Diesel Engines.”
The updated regulation replaces the previous standard GSO 1785:2013, which was made mandatory under Ministerial Decision No. 285/2015.

As per the announcement, Compliance with the new technical requirements will become mandatory from September 1, 2026. All imported and locally manufactured lubricating oils must meet the updated specifications and complete conformity assessment procedures approved by the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology before being placed on the market.
The ministry noted that the regulatory procedures fall under the conformity assessment system issued by Ministerial Decision No. 190/2021, adding that any further updates will be announced in due course.
