MUSCAT : Sufyan Mehmood etched his name into Oman cricket history on Wednesday, becoming the first Omani captain to lead the national team to qualification for the Asian Games while also climbing to the top of Oman’s T20I wicket-taking charts for 2026.
The landmark achievement came as Oman defeated Bahrain by 20 runs in the Men’s T20I Asian Games Qualifier in Singapore, securing a place at the Nagoya-Aichi 2026 Asian Games and marking a historic milestone for the Sultanate’s all-homegrown squad.
Under Sufyan’s leadership, Oman made it two wins from two matches in Group B, ensuring qualification for both the semi-finals and next year’s Asian Games. The achievement represents one of the most significant moments in Oman cricket’s recent history, with the team set to compete alongside some of Asia’s strongest cricketing nations, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Speaking after the historic qualification, Sufyan expressed pride in leading the national side.
“I am honoured and happy to lead the side and represent my country. Qualifying for the Asian Games is a proud moment for all of us and a reward for the hard work put in by every player, coach and member of the support staff,” he said.
“This achievement belongs to the entire team and to Oman cricket. We have shown what Omani players are capable of, and we look forward to representing the Sultanate on one of Asia’s biggest sporting stages.”
The day proved memorable on a personal level for the captain as well. After claiming a key wicket against Bahrain, Sufyan moved to the top of Oman’s T20I wicket-taking list for 2026, underlining his growing influence as both a leader and all-round performer.
Sufyan also made a valuable contribution with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 40 from 27 deliveries and helping Oman post a challenging total of 184 for 4 after being asked to bat first.
The foundation for the victory was laid by opener Mohammed Al Balushi, who produced a stunning innings of 81 from 51 balls, striking seven fours and six sixes. Together with Shuaib Al Balushi, who made 32, he shared a 101-run opening partnership that put Bahrain under pressure from the outset.
After Shuaib’s dismissal, Sufyan ensured the momentum continued, anchoring the innings through the closing overs and adding crucial runs as Oman posted a formidable target.
In reply, Bahrain suffered an early setback when Shuaib removed Numan Yousuf without a run on the board. Captain Junaid Aziz and Abdulla Pervaiz attempted to rebuild the innings before Oman struck back through Sameer Othman.
Bahrain remained in the hunt thanks to a 65-run stand between Junaid and Mohammed Sameer, who blasted 43 from just 24 balls. However, Oman’s bowlers held their nerve at key moments. Othman dismissed the dangerous Sameer and finished with figures of 2 for 34, while Sufyan removed Bahrain captain Junaid Aziz for 46 to halt the chase.
Nawed Al Balushi also chipped in with a wicket as Bahrain were restricted to 164 for 5 from their 20 overs.
Mohammed Al Balushi was named Player of the Match for his match-winning knock, which laid the platform for Oman’s victory.
The result followed Oman’s opening win over Singapore and confirmed the team’s place at the Nagoya-Aichi 2026 Asian Games. The qualification is particularly significant as it has been achieved by a squad made up entirely of Oman-based players, highlighting the progress of homegrown cricket talent in the Sultanate.
Oman will now face Hong Kong on Friday to determine the Group B winners before turning their attention to the semi-finals.
Regardless of the outcome, Sufyan and his men have already secured their place in history. For the first time, an Omani captain has led the national team to qualification for the Asian Games — a landmark achievement that further cements Sufyan’s growing legacy in Oman cricket.
For Sufyan, it was a day of double celebration: guiding his country to one of its greatest cricketing milestones while also becoming Oman’s leading T20I wicket-taker of 2026, a testament to his importance as both captain and performer for the national side.
