WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday outlined a series of demands and proposals concerning Iran’s nuclear programme and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, saying Tehran must commit to never acquiring a nuclear weapon and calling for the immediate reopening of the strategic waterway to unrestricted international shipping.

In a post on social media, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz should remain fully open, with vessels allowed to transit freely in both directions without tolls or restrictions. He also called for the removal of any naval mines in the area, saying such devices should either be cleared or destroyed to ensure safe passage for commercial and military vessels.

Trump claimed that U.S. forces had previously undertaken mine-clearing operations in the region using advanced underwater capabilities and suggested that any remaining mines would be addressed by Iran.

The U.S. president further stated that ships affected by what he described as a U.S. naval blockade would be permitted to return to their home ports following the lifting of restrictions.

On the nuclear issue, Trump said underground nuclear-related materials would be excavated and destroyed in cooperation with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He asserted that only the United States and China possess the technical capability to carry out such an operation.

Trump also said that no payments would be made “until further notice” and indicated that agreements had been reached on several other issues, though he did not provide details.

He added that he would convene with officials in the White House Situation Room to make final decisions on the matters under discussion.
