Golden day for Oman as athletes raise medal count to 7 at Gulf Games

Oman clinched its first two gold medals at the 4th Gulf Games in Doha, taking the national tally to seven medals.

Doha: Fidaa bint Fouad Al-Barwani delivered Oman’s first gold medal after an impressive display in the women’s 49kg taekwondo category, while Asraa bint Saif Al-Siyabi secured the second gold in the épée fencing competition.

The latest victories boosted Oman’s overall medal count to two gold and five bronze medals, underlining the strong performances of the national teams in Doha.

In taekwondo, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Hajri earned a bronze medal in the men’s 80kg category, while Shabib bin Salem Al Sinani added another bronze in the 68kg category. Ali Al Busaidi also secured a bronze medal in the foil fencing competition.

Oman had opened its medal campaign on the first day of the Games through Nibras bin Mohammed Al-Touqi, who won bronze in the 58kg taekwondo category, alongside Omaima bint Harb Al-Hinai, who claimed bronze in the women’s 49kg division.

Speaking after her victory, Fidaa Al-Barwani expressed pride in winning Oman’s first gold medal of the tournament, saying the achievement would motivate her to achieve more success in future competitions.

She said the competition was intense, but determination and focus helped her achieve the goal of raising the Omani flag on the podium.

Gold medallist Israa Al-Siyabi described the triumph in the épée fencing event as one of the most memorable moments of her sporting career. She credited the achievement to strong preparation and continuous support from the technical and administrative teams, adding that the victory would inspire her to work harder for future accomplishments in Omani sport.

Meanwhile, Oman’s national teams continue their campaign on the fourth day of the Games with athletics, shooting, snooker, table tennis and swimming competitions scheduled.

The national athletics team is set to compete in several men’s and women’s races, while the shooting team begins its participation in the men’s 10m air rifle event featuring Hamad bin Saeed Al Khatri, Salem bin Ali Al Naabi and Ali bin Sulaiman Al Saidi. The women’s shooting squad includes Amina bint Khamis Al Tarshiya, Safaa bint Saeed Al Jabri and Al Anoud bint Abdullah Al Khalili.

The snooker team also opens its campaign in the singles event through Ahmed bin Bashir Al-Khasibi and Qasim bin Rashid Al-Balushi, while the table tennis team continues its matches in the tournament.

Oman’s swimming team will conclude its participation with Hamad bin Sulaiman Al-Hasani competing in the 1500m freestyle and Mohammed bin Khamis Al-Wahaibi taking part in the 50m backstroke event.
