MUSCAT – The operation, known as mandibular distraction osteogenesis, involved implanting a mandibular distraction device to lengthen the lower jaw of the newborn, who was born with the rare congenital condition affecting breathing and feeding.

The procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary team from the Directorate General of Health Services in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, including specialists from the Ear, Nose and Throat Department, Paediatric Anaesthesia Department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and nursing teams at Nizwa Hospital, in collaboration with the Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Al Nahdha Hospital.

Health officials described the surgery as one of the most delicate and complex neonatal procedures, underscoring the growing capabilities of Oman’s healthcare sector in advanced specialised care.
