MUSCAT : Indian badminton player Balasubramannian N.G delivered a dominant all-round performance at the Oman Open Badminton Championship, clinching the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles titles as the three-day tournament concluded at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher on Saturday.

The championship, organised by the Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC), witnessed strong participation from Omani and expatriate players and marked the conclusion of Oman’s badminton season for the year.

Balasubramannian, the tournament’s top seed, underlined his supremacy throughout the competition with a clean sweep of all major titles in a display of technical consistency and attacking play.

In the men’s singles final, the Indian star defeated Iranian player Ali Shah Hosseini 21-13, 21-15 after earlier overcoming Philip Afolabi 21-17, 21-19 in the semifinal.

He continued his winning run in the men’s doubles competition, partnering compatriot Rajesh Ravi to defeat the Indian duo Jeswin Mathew and Vikash Nair in one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament. After dropping the opening game, Balasubramannian and Ravi fought back to win 18-21, 25-23, 21-14.

Balasubramannian then completed a remarkable treble in the mixed doubles category alongside Indian player Diya. The pair rallied from a game down to beat Vikash Nair and Beta Mansouri 19-21, 23-21, 21-14 in the final.

The closing ceremony was held under the patronage of Hisham bin Juma al Sinani, Director General of Sports Welfare and Development at Oman’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in the presence of Dr. Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Droushi, Chairman of ORSC, committee members, officials and badminton enthusiasts.

The Oman Open also brought the curtain down on a packed domestic badminton season, which included the Omani Men’s Badminton Championship, Omani Women’s Badminton Championship and the Athlete Preparation Centers Championship held last week.

According to organisers, the season featured more than 210 matches officiated by 23 Omani referees and supported by seven qualified tournament organisers, reflecting the growing development of badminton in Oman.

More than 40 players representing various nationalities competed in the Oman Open, while participation in the Omani men’s and women’s championships exceeded 90 players.

Speaking after the finals, Hisham al Sinani praised the standard of competition and the organisational efforts behind the championship.

“Such tournaments provide strong motivation for badminton players in Oman and create opportunities to discover promising talents capable of representing the Sultanate internationally in the future,” he said.

Dr. Abdulrahim al Droushi described the Oman Open as a fitting conclusion to the season and said the rising participation numbers reflected the sport’s rapid growth in the country.

“Since the establishment of ORSC two and a half years ago, the committee has worked according to international federation standards while implementing ambitious development plans for the sport,” he said.

Balasubramannian said winning all three titles was a memorable achievement and credited the organisers for the professional conduct of the tournament.

“The achievement reflects my continued dedication to badminton and technical development. I thank ORSC for its efforts in promoting the sport, and we hope to see more badminton tournaments and competitions in the future,” he said.
