Phuket: The meetings were held on the sidelines of the World Conference on Sustainable Tourism, with Oman’s delegation led by His Excellency Ibrahim bin Said Al Busaidi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism. The discussions brought together key officials from both nations to examine strategies that enhance competitiveness and drive sustainable growth in the tourism sector.

During the visit, His Excellency met with Her Excellency Supawan Therat, Chief Executive Officer of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, and Siripakorn Chiosamut, Director General of the Sustainable Tourism Areas Development Authority. The Omani delegation was briefed on Thailand’s successful approach to attracting international conferences and events, including the development of structured annual event systems and incentive programmes linked to economic impact and visitor numbers.

Thai officials also highlighted the importance of strong public-private partnerships and targeted international marketing strategies in positioning destinations as global hubs for major exhibitions and conferences.

In a separate meeting, the delegation reviewed Thailand’s model for managing and developing sustainable tourism destinations. The approach focuses on integrated collaboration between government entities and partners, supported by participatory planning and implementation. Key initiatives include promoting community-based tourism, improving economic returns for local communities, enhancing visitor and resident satisfaction, and adhering to international standards in destination management.

Both sides discussed how Oman could benefit from these experiences by introducing advanced incentive frameworks, strengthening institutional collaboration, and building national capacities. Emphasis was also placed on empowering local communities to play an active role in tourism development, ensuring a balance between economic growth and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.

Thai officials expressed keen interest in expanding cooperation with Oman, particularly in attracting global events and advancing sustainable tourism initiatives. They reaffirmed their readiness to support joint programmes that enhance the tourism sector’s competitiveness in both countries.
