WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump said he is extending the ceasefire with Iran, holding back a planned military strike to give negotiations more time to progress.

The move, announced Tuesday, follows a request from Pakistani mediators involved in efforts to broker a deal. The truce had been set to lapse on Wednesday.

Trump said US forces would remain on standby while maintaining the existing blockade, adding that the ceasefire would continue until Iran submits a proposal and talks are concluded.

The absence of a defined timeline suggests the extension is open-ended for now, contingent on diplomatic developments.

Iran has not issued an immediate response. The semi-official Tasnim news agency said Tehran will outline its position later.
