MUSCAT – The project, which includes integrated battery energy storage systems of equal capacity, is being developed as part of bilateral investment agreements between the two countries and represents a shift from planning to implementation.
The ceremony was attended by Botswana’s President His Excellency Duma Gideon Boko and His Excellency Abdul Salam bin Mohammed Al Murshidi, Chairman of the Oman Investment Authority, along with officials from both sides.
The initiative follows recent high-level talks in Muscat between His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and President Boko, and comes just days after the signing of multiple cooperation agreements, underscoring the pace of execution and commitment to the partnership.
The Maun project is being implemented by O-Green, a subsidiary of the Oman Investment Authority, in collaboration with the Botswana Power Corporation. It is the first project under a broader energy cooperation framework targeting up to 3,000 MW of renewable capacity.
Mustafa bin Mohammed Al Hinai, CEO of O-Green, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to delivering large-scale renewable energy projects in line with international standards. He added that the development will be executed in phases to support the stability and efficiency of Botswana’s energy system.
Once completed, the plant is expected to significantly boost Botswana’s power generation capacity, while the integration of battery storage will enhance grid reliability and support peak load management.
The project is also positioned as a foundation for a wider energy platform aimed at supporting Botswana’s ambitions to become a regional energy hub and to drive sustainable economic growth through renewable energy.
The agreements signed between the two countries cover several sectors, including renewable energy, mineral exploration, fuel storage infrastructure, and cooperation between entities such as OQ Group, Botswana Oil Company, and Oman Mining Development Company.
