GENEVA – Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, described the law as discriminatory and said it contradicts Israel’s obligations under international law, including the right to life. He expressed disappointment at the legislation’s approval, warning that it raises serious concerns about due process violations and must be urgently repealed.

The High Commissioner highlighted the difficulty of reconciling the death penalty with human dignity and emphasized that the law increases the risk of innocent people being executed.
Last Monday, the Israeli Knesset approved the bill, a move met with widespread international condemnation, reigniting global debate over the treatment of Palestinian prisoners.
