MUSCAT : The rainfall, driven by a low-pressure system, led to the flow of wadis and the replenishment of traditional irrigation systems (aflaj), transforming several locations into popular destinations for residents and visitors, particularly over the weekend. Moderate weather and scenic surroundings have further boosted their appeal.

These conditions have given the governorate a distinctive seasonal tourism boost, with valleys offering diverse terrain that combines mountains, green farms, and traditional villages, along with trails suited for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The revival of traditional aflaj systems – one of Oman’s key heritage features – has further enhanced the environmental and cultural value of these sites, supporting agriculture while attracting visitors seeking authentic experiences.

Among the most prominent destinations are Wadi Al Abyad in Nakhal, Wadi Mistal and its surrounding villages, and Wadi Al Hamam, all of which have seen increased visitor interest due to continuous water flow and natural beauty. Other notable locations include Wadi Bani Kharous in Al Awabi, as well as Wadi Al Sahtan and Wadi Bani Auf in Rustaq, which are popular among adventure tourism enthusiasts.

In Wadi Al Ma’awil, several valleys have also witnessed strong flows, turning them into natural retreats for families and visitors seeking outdoor recreation.

These developments highlight the potential of South Al Batinah’s environmental assets to support sustainable and seasonal tourism, while calling for greater awareness to preserve these natural sites.

The municipality confirmed ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, including road access to valley areas, the provision of basic facilities, and enhanced safety measures to accommodate increased visitor numbers. Meanwhile, tourism authorities continue to promote these destinations through curated routes, informational materials, and coordinated programs aimed at boosting ecotourism in the governorate.
