The recent decision by the Indian school board to increase school fees has raised serious concerns among parents. At a time when families are already grappling with rising living costs, such an increase places an additional and unnecessary financial burden on the community.

Parents had previously been assured that the infrastructure fee would be waived. This assurance played a significant role in building trust between the school administration and the parent community. Unfortunately, this commitment has not been honoured. Instead of removing the infrastructure fee as promised, the school has now introduced an additional increase of 2 Omani Rials. For many families—particularly those with multiple children enrolled in the school—this seemingly modest increase represents a considerable financial strain.

The concern among parents extends beyond the fee hike itself to the manner in which the decision has been implemented. Transparency, accountability, and responsible governance are fundamental principles that any educational institution must uphold. When commitments made to parents are not fulfilled, it weakens confidence in the administration and raises legitimate questions about the priorities and decision-making processes of the governing body.

It is also widely known that the school faced a substantial financial penalty of approximately RO 1 million, reportedly resulting from irresponsible, ineffective, and inefficient administrative practices. Such a penalty points to serious lapses in management and governance. It is neither reasonable nor fair for parents to bear the indirect consequences of these administrative failures. The financial responsibility for such penalties should rest with those directly involved in the decisions and agreements that led to these outcomes. Individuals who authorized and signed these agreements must be held accountable.

Moreover, it is important to recognize that the school is a community institution, established to serve the interests of students and their families. Members of the school board are elected representatives of the community, and their role is not to act as unilateral decision-makers or authorities operating without consultation. Rather, they are entrusted with the responsibility to act in the best interests of students, parents, and the wider community. Their decisions should reflect the collective welfare of those they represent.

Parents should not be viewed as a convenient source of revenue to offset administrative shortcomings. Education is meant to nurture and support the future generation—not become a source of financial distress for families.

In light of these concerns, the Indian school board must reconsider the recent fee increase and honour its earlier commitment to waive the infrastructure fee. At the same time, mechanisms must be established to ensure accountability for the administrative mismanagement that resulted in such significant penalties.

Parents are not opposed to progress, development, or the improvement of school facilities. What they seek is fairness, transparency, and responsible governance.

The voices of parents deserve to be heard.
