LONDON : The 36-year-old made the announcement on Tuesday, confirming that he would be stepping away from the international stage after a career that included appearances in two UEFA European Championship finals with England in 2021 and 2024.
Walker, who last represented England in a friendly against Senegal in 2025, leaves the national side as the 10th most capped player in the history of England’s men’s team. Over the years, the former Manchester City defender established himself as one of the most reliable figures in England’s backline, known for his pace, defensive awareness, and consistency at the highest level.
Reflecting on his decision, Walker expressed pride in his international journey. “I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England,” he said. “To represent my country at five major tournaments, to get to the finals that we’ve reached and to be surrounded by this England team, especially the players and the managers that I’ve had the privilege of working under, has been a great honour.”

Walker added that stepping away now allows him to bring closure to his international career. “But today is the time that comes to an end. It’s good for me to have a little bit of closure to my career on the international stage,” he said.
The defender, who joined Burnley this season, has struggled to replicate the form that defined his prime years, making a return to the England squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup increasingly unlikely.
England manager Thomas Tuchel paid tribute to Walker’s contribution to the national team, praising his commitment and longevity. “I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career,” Tuchel said. “I was always aware that he was one of England’s greats who fully embraced the highest honour of representing his country.”
Tuchel added that Walker’s longevity at the international level reflected his professionalism and dedication. “An international career spanning 14 years and five major tournaments is testament to Kyle’s dedication,” he said.
The English Football Association has confirmed that a tribute to Walker’s international career will be held at a future England fixture following the World Cup, recognising his significant contribution to the national team.
