BEIJING – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said ahead of a potential summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump later this month.
Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of an annual parliamentary meeting in Beijing, Wang warned that the absence of communication between the world’s two largest economies could lead to dangerous misunderstandings.
“The lack of dialogue between the two countries will only lead to misunderstandings and miscalculations, which will escalate the confrontation and harm the world,” he said.
His remarks came amid speculation about a possible meeting between Xi and Trump, which analysts say could take place before the end of the month, although China has not officially announced such a summit.
Wang said the agenda for high-level talks with the United States was already under discussion, adding that both sides needed to make comprehensive preparations to create a favourable environment for managing existing disputes. He did not provide further details.
The Chinese minister also appeared to criticise what he described as the ‘Donroe Doctrine’, referring to a reformulation of a 19th-century policy emphasising Washington’s sphere of influence in the Americas.
