TEHRAN : Israel sounded air-raid sirens across the country on Saturday and ordered residents to remain close to protected spaces after announcing a strike against Iran, as authorities braced for possible retaliation.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the Israeli military said the alerts were issued to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched towards Israel. Citizens were instructed to stay near shelters and follow guidance from the Home Front Command.
The army said it was shifting all areas of the country from “full activity” to “essential activity,” a move that includes the closure of schools, a ban on public gatherings and the suspension of non-essential workplaces.

Israel also closed its airspace to civilian flights until further notice, according to aviation authorities, in a precautionary step amid heightened security concerns.
In Iran, two explosions were heard in western Tehran, witnesses said. Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that several missiles struck areas around University Street and the Jomhouri district of the capital.
There was no immediate official confirmation from Iranian authorities on the extent of the damage or possible casualties.
