CHENNAI : India produced a commanding all-round display to defeat Zimbabwe by 72 runs in their Super 8 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday, staying firmly in contention for a semi-final spot at the T20 World Cup.
Powered by an aggressive batting performance that propelled them past the 250-run mark, India put Zimbabwe under sustained pressure from the outset. The Chepauk surface, known for assisting spinners later in the game, offered little relief as India’s top order attacked relentlessly during the powerplay and middle overs.

Zimbabwe responded with intent, led by a valiant unbeaten 97 from Brian Bennett, who kept his side in the contest with clean hitting and calculated strokeplay. However, the steep target proved too much.

India’s bowling unit tightened the screws at crucial moments, with left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh delivering a decisive spell of 3 for 24. His breakthroughs halted Zimbabwe’s momentum just as they threatened to build partnerships.
The result keeps India’s semi-final ambitions alive, but their path remains clear and uncompromising victory against West Indies in their final Super 8 fixture is essential to secure a place in the last four.
