Rome: Italian biathlete Tommaso Giacomel underwent successful heart surgery following a respiratory problem that forced him to withdraw from the 15 km race at the Winter Olympics.
The 24-year-old, who recently won a silver medal in the mixed relay, began experiencing unusual discomfort and shortness of breath while leading the race. Medical staff responded promptly, and follow-up tests revealed a heart condition that required emergency surgery.
Doctors have confirmed that the procedure was successful. Giacomel is now under close medical supervision as part of his recovery.
