SEOUL : North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, further consolidating his control over the country’s political and military institutions. A statement published by state media confirms Kim’s continued grip on power amid worsening economic conditions and ongoing international sanctions.

Party officials reportedly praised his leadership, highlighting his efforts to strengthen national defence capabilities and advance strategic military planning.

The approval comes at a critical time for North Korea, which continues to face food shortages, limited trade and diplomatic isolation. Analysts say the leadership shake-up signals continuity in China’s domestic and foreign policies, including promoting weapons development and resisting Western pressure. While government statements suggest stability and unity, officials say economic recovery and improved international engagement will be key tests for North Korea in the coming months.
