MUSCAT : The committee is continuing its efforts to position the Sultanate of Oman as a leading hub for maritime sports regionally and internationally, leveraging the country’s extensive coastline and strategic technical and organisational plans.

Sheikh Ali bin Said Ali Fadhil, Chairman of the Committee, told the Oman News Agency that the committee plays a comprehensive role encompassing strategy development, tournament organization, personnel training, and oversight of international participation. He highlighted that the committee organises more than 15 events annually, including local tournaments, training camps, and community programmes, engaging over 1,200 male and female athletes from various coastal governorates.

Over the past three years, interest in maritime sports has surged by approximately 40 percent, particularly among youth. This growth is attributed to awareness campaigns, inclusion of marine activities in national and community events, and collaboration with over 12 clubs and educational institutions to integrate these sports into their annual programs.

Sheikh Ali emphasised that Oman’s diverse marine environment – geographically and climatically – supports year-round training and competitions, contributing to the hosting of regional championships and attracting international participation. National teams have achieved more than 10 medals and top rankings in Gulf and Asian championships over the past two years, reflecting improved technical levels through intensive training programs, eight domestic and international training camps, and the involvement of international coaching and refereeing expertise.

Last season, the committee organised around 18 marine championships and events, with participation from more than 35 teams and clubs. The expansion of age categories highlights the growing base of participants and the success of recruitment plans.

Addressing challenges, he noted that limited resources and the continuous need for trained technical personnel posed obstacles. These were addressed through strengthened partnerships with government and private entities, rationalized spending, and phased planning to ensure program sustainability.

Looking ahead, the committee plans to organise at least 20 tournaments and events in 2026, including two new competitions for under-16 and under-18 athletes. It also aims to conduct 10 technical and refereeing courses to qualify more than 60 national coaches and referees according to international standards.

The committee is prioritising talent discovery through selection programmes in coastal governorates, aiming to increase participation to over 1,500 athletes and activate marine sports in at least 15 clubs, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. Cooperation with the ministry provides technical and administrative support, integration of strategic plans, and the inclusion of marine sports in permanent club programs and regular championships to enhance institutional sustainability.

Sheikh Ali added that the committee leverages international expertise through accredited lecturers and external programs while seeking sponsors and strategic partners to support championships and national teams. He stressed that Oman’s natural infrastructure and geographic location offer significant potential to develop sports tourism and boost the economy through maritime sports investment.
