PALLEKELE, Sri Lanka – Australia’s turbulent campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ended in disappointment as the former champions were eliminated in the group stage after a series of costly defeats and an unfavourable points-table equation.
The early exit marks one of Australia’s most underwhelming performances in recent editions of the tournament, highlighting the unpredictability of the shortest format.
Drawn in a competitive group alongside Sri Lanka national cricket team, Zimbabwe national cricket team, Ireland cricket team and Oman national cricket team, Australia entered the competition among the favourites. However, inconsistent displays with both bat and ball left Mitchell Marsh’s side struggling to build momentum at crucial stages of the tournament.

Their fate was effectively sealed following a comprehensive defeat to Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, a result that dented their net run rate and left qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Despite flashes of individual brilliance, Australia were unable to string together complete performances, with middle-order collapses and inconsistent bowling spells proving costly in tight contests.
