Knife attack at Russian University injures four Indian students

Four Indian students were injured in a knife attack at a university in the Russian city of Ufa, the Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed on Saturday.

Moscow: The incident occurred at a sports hall located near hostels housing foreign students at a university in the Bashkortostan Republic.

In a statement shared on X, the embassy said several people were hurt in the attack, including four Indian nationals, and assured that Indian authorities were coordinating closely with local officials. “An unfortunate incident of an attack has occurred in Ufa. Several persons, including four Indian students, have been injured. The Embassy is in touch with the authorities and officials from the Consulate in Kazan are on their way to Ufa to provide assistance to the injured students,” the statement said.

According to preliminary reports cited by news agency PTI, a teenager entered the State Medical University in Ufa and began stabbing students. The incident triggered an immediate police response.

Russia’s Interior Ministry said the suspect resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. “The attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were injured. The suspect also inflicted bodily harm on himself,” said Major General Irina Volk, spokesperson for the Russia’s Interior Ministry, speaking to RTVI.

Unconfirmed reports circulating on credible Russian Telegram channels suggest there may have been two attackers. One of them is said to be in serious condition and has been admitted to a hospital. Authorities have not officially confirmed this information.
