DUBAI : Indian teacher Rouble Nagi has won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize 2026, organisers said on Thursday, recognising her two decades of work using art to expand access to education for children in underserved communities across India.
The award was presented at the World Governments Summit in Dubai by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, alongside Sunny Varkey, founder of GEMS Education and the Varkey Foundation.
Nagi, an art and social science teacher from Mumbai, was honoured for founding Misaal India and the Rouble Nagi Art Foundation, initiatives that use creative expression as a gateway to literacy, numeracy and social learning in urban slums and remote rural areas.

Over the past 20 years, the movement has established more than 800 learning centres, mobilised about 600 volunteers and paid teachers, and reached children often excluded from formal schooling, according to organisers.
Many of Nagi’s classrooms extend beyond traditional school buildings. Her “Living Walls of Learning” programme transforms neighbourhood lanes and courtyards into mural-filled public spaces that function as permanent, community-wide textbooks.
The Global Teacher Prize, launched by the Varkey Foundation, is awarded annually to an exceptional educator who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession.
