DUBAI- In the quarter finals, UAE surprised defending champions Algeria with one of the most impressive results of the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup. After a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time at Qatar’s Al Bayt Stadium, the UAE won 7-6 on penalties.
Algeria took the lead in the match, but the United Arab Emirates tied the score and forced extra time. Goalkeeper Hamad Al Mekbali was the standout hero, saving a vital penalty, while Richard Akonnor converted the decisive penalty to send the UAE into the semi-finals against tournament favourites Morocco.
This result was an important milestone for the UAE national team, demonstrating their resilience and tactical discipline under pressure.
