Series of earthquakes up to magnitude 5.7 hit Arabian Sea near Oman coast

Three light to moderate earthquakes were recorded in the Arabian Sea during the early hours of Wednesday, according to the Earthquake Monitoring Center at Sultan Qaboos University.

MUSCAT : The Center reported that the first tremor, classified as a minor earthquake, occurred at 2:19 a.m. local time. Measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, the quake’s epicentre was located approximately 263 kilometres southwest of Salalah, at a depth of about 35 kilometres.

A second, stronger earthquake was recorded at 4:27 a.m., with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale (mwp). The epicentre was situated around 245 kilometres southwest of Salalah, at a depth of 12 kilometres.

Shortly afterward, at 5:05 a.m., a third earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the same region. The epicentre of this tremor was located approximately 209 kilometres southwest of Salalah, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
