Tehran — Iran warned on Sunday that it would retaliate against the United States and Israel if it comes under attack, as nationwide protests driven by economic hardship and political anger continued to spread, deepening one of the country’s most serious internal crises in years.

Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said any military strike on Iran would be met with a decisive response, adding that U.S. bases and Israeli assets in the region would be considered legitimate targets. He warned Washington and its allies against what he described as “miscalculation” at a time of heightened tension.

The comments follow increasingly sharp rhetoric from Washington, where U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced support for Iranian protesters and said his administration is reviewing options in response to Tehran’s crackdown. U.S. officials have not confirmed any plans for military action.
