New York: An armoured vehicle transporting Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, arrived at the courthouse under tight security, reversing into the building while flanked by Drug Enforcement Administration agents. The case has been assigned to senior federal judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, 92, of the Southern District of New York, a veteran jurist nominated by Bill Clinton in 1998.

Hellerstein is widely known for presiding over major terrorism and national security cases, including proceedings stemming from the September 11, 2001 attacks. Over the summer, former Venezuelan general and intelligence chief Hugo Carvajal Barrios pleaded guilty before Hellerstein to narco-terrorism and drug-trafficking charges.
