Melbourne: Ben Stokes’ England produced a statement performance at the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, wrapping up the fourth match of the Ashes late on the second day while chasing a modest target of 175. Harry Brook (18 not out) and Jamie Smith (three not out) were at the crease as England completed the chase with ease, scoring at more than five runs per over.

In a bold tactical move, England promoted fast bowler Brydon Carse to No. 3 in their pursuit of quick runs, a gamble that paid off as the visitors recorded the highest total of the match in the fourth innings after a series of low scores earlier in the contest.

The victory marked England’s first away Test win against Australia since January 2011, when they triumphed in Sydney, ending a drought of 5,468 days, almost 15 years, without a Test success Down Under. Despite Australia retaining a 3–1 lead in the series, England’s win has added intrigue to the final encounter.

The result also strengthened England’s position in the ICC World Test Championship cycle, lifting their win-loss percentage to 35.19 per cent, though they remain seventh in the standings. Australia continue to lead the table with 85.71 per cent, but their margin has narrowed over second-placed New Zealand (77.78 per cent) and third-placed South Africa (75 per cent).

However, England’s celebrations were tempered by an injury concern, with key pacer Gus Atkinson suffering a hamstring injury early on day two, leaving his availability for the series finale in doubt.

The fifth and final Test of the Ashes series begins at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 4, where England will look to build on their momentum and finish the tour on a high.
