RAS AL KHAIMAH — Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak and a major tourism destination, has temporarily closed all operations to allow for safety assessments and maintenance after heavy rainfall affected the region earlier this month.

Operators said the closure follows significant weather conditions between Dec. 17 and 19, which led to standing water in parts of the mountain and prompted precautionary road closures and targeted maintenance works. All attractions will remain shut until further notice while specialist teams conduct inspections to ensure safety standards are met.

The suspension affects all activities at the site, including the Jais Flight Zipline, Via Ferrata routes, Bear Grylls Explorers Camp, dining outlets such as 1484 by Puro and Red Rock BBQ, and yoga sessions at the Jais Viewing Deck Park, according to the operators .

Authorities have also advised visitors not to camp in wadis during the period of unsettled weather and to exercise caution in areas where rainfall has caused slippery paths and shifting rocks. While some hiking and climbing areas have not been formally closed, assessments are ongoing and visitors have been urged to avoid affected routes where necessary .

Reopening will take place in phases once each area has been inspected and upgraded to meet safety requirements. Winter is typically the peak season for Jebel Jais, but officials said the temporary closure was necessary to prioritise visitor wellbeing .

“At Jebel Jais, responsible tourism means putting people, nature and safety first,” Donald Bremner, chief executive of Marjan Lifestyle, said in a statement, adding that a cautious approach would help preserve the mountain environment while maintaining high safety standards .

Operators said updates on the phased reopening would be issued through official channels as maintenance progresses.
